A pragmatic visionary, the story of Juliusz Mieroszewski

Status: Ongoing research

Project management: Dr Maciej Łuczak

In 2026, we will celebrate the 120th anniversary of the birth and 50th anniversary of the death of Juliusz Mieroszewski, the patron of the Mieroszewski Centre.

This is one reason to take a closer look at his uncommon character and outstanding achievements, and to reflect on the message of his journalistic output. Particularly concerning Polish eastern policy. Mieroszewski is still somewhat overshadowed by Jerzy Giedroyc, even though he was the flagship political columnist of Kultura in Paris. Meanwhile, Giedroyc said of his editorial friend: ‘I consider the idea of the ULB to be the most important component of his output. Other things he wrote had as their subject the changing political scene and were often outdated. But this idea is something enduring. The archival and library queries, and the resultant popular science book dedicated to Juliusz Mieroszewski - a pragmatic visionary - are therefore intended to describe his very colourful life, his lasting journalistic output, and to present his legacy. And of it - in our difficult and dangerous times - contemporaries should certainly remember.
