The Centre is carrying out an opinion poll programme on mutual perceptions of Poles and citizens of Eastern European countries.

Public opinion research

Since its inception, the Mieroszewski Centre's mission has been to initiate, support and carry out activities aimed at citizens of Eastern European countries, including Ukrainians, Belarusians, Georgians and Moldovans.

These activities are intended not only to help strengthen the independence of these countries, but also to deepen the ties between them and Poland and its citizens. To this end, the Centre carries out various initiatives, one of which is a programme of opinion polls on mutual perceptions of Poles and citizens of Eastern European countries and contemporary problems concerning mutual relations.

The opinion poll programme helps to answer many of the questions bothering both contemporary citizens and researchers studying public sentiment in Eastern Europe. Thanks to its surveys, it is possible to find out, among other things, how citizens of other Eastern European countries perceive us as a nation, what they associate Poland and Poles with and what knowledge they have of their own and our country's past. Opinion polls are also a valuable tool in the fight against negative stereotypes that have developed in particular communities in Poland and abroad, and one of the first steps in effectively combating them.

What are the main objectives of the opinion polling programme in Poland and Eastern European countries?

The opinion polling programme is carried out both among Polish citizens and representatives of other Eastern European nations. Its primary objective is to provide all interested persons with reliable and factual knowledge on the mutual perception of Poles and citizens of Eastern European countries, and to attempt to explain why our mutual relations are shaped the way they are. The programme also makes it possible to continuously monitor changes in public mood, which have become particularly dynamic following Russia's aggression against Ukraine in 2022.

The Mieroszewski Centre not only publishes the results of the opinion polls themselves, but also enriches them with additional commentaries and interpretations by experts, which allow the data and information contained therein to be better understood also by people outside the scientific community. All this makes the Mieroszewski Centre's opinion polls a valuable source of reliable and credible knowledge about the public mood prevailing both in Poland and in other Eastern European countries.
