The Pragmatic Visionary. On Juliusz Mieroszewski
Juliusz Mieroszewski was one of the most important Polish intellectuals of the twentieth century. A columnist for the Paris-based Kultura, a co-creator of modern Polish thinking about Ukraine, Lithuania and Belarus, and one of Poland’s most perceptive political analysts, he remains a surprisingly little-known figure today.
He lived through an age of major crises and turning points. He experienced war, exile and the Cold War. For decades, he analysed a changing political reality, trying to understand processes that many of his contemporaries could not yet see. He helped shape the intellectual milieu of the Paris-based Kultura and belonged to the group of authors who transformed Polish thinking about relations with Ukraine, Lithuania and Belarus.
This is the first popular biography of Juliusz Mieroszewski. Drawing on Mieroszewski’s writings, correspondence and archival materials, Maciej Łuczak reconstructs his intellectual journey and shows how ideas were formed that later became one of the foundations of Polish thinking about Eastern Europe.
A special place in the book is given to Mieroszewski’s relationship with Jerzy Giedroyc and the Paris-based Kultura circle. As Professor Antoni Dudek notes, the author “reconstructs the process by which the political thought of the Paris-based Kultura milieu was formed, while also showing the complexity of the relationship between Mieroszewski and Jerzy Giedroyc.”
Pragmatic Visionary is a story of intellectual courage, responsibility for the written word and the art of critical thinking. It is also a story of a man who believed that realism does not mean defending one’s convictions at all costs, but being ready to revise them when reality changes.
Perhaps the most important legacy of Juliusz Mieroszewski is not a set of specific forecasts or political concepts, but the way of thinking he left to future generations.
