Last Citizens of the Grand Duchy of Lithuania. Studies and materials

Status: Ongoing research

Project management: Prof. Aleksander Smalianchuk

The aim of the research, which will result in the publication of a monograph in Polish and Belarusian, is to attempt a comprehensive description of the origins, development and twilight of the so-called ‘national idea’ as an attempt to create a national ideology, culturally based on the memory of belonging to the former Grand Duchy of Lithuania.

The book will be a collection of biographical essays presenting the most interesting figures among the creators and activists of the national idea, such as Michał Römer, Roman Skirmunt, Ludwik Abramowicz, Bolesław Jałowiecki, Konstancja Skirmuntt, Stanisław Swianiewicz, among others. The work will also include a chapter on national ideas and nationalists present in the pages of the Parisian Culture. The study includes an analysis of documents, archival materials and literary testimonies. The biographical essay will be complemented by a selection of the most important documents and texts related to the so-called ‘domestic idea’.
