The mission of the Mieroszewski Centre is to initiate, support and carry out activities aimed at the peoples of Eastern Europe.
The Mieroszewski Centre is a state institution established by the act of the Polish Parliment and supervised by the Ministry of Culture and National Heritage of the Republic of Poland.
The mission of the Mieroszewski Centre is to initiate, support and carry out activities aimed at the peoples of Eastern Europe, in particular Ukrainians, Belarusians, Georgians and Moldovans, in order to strengthen the independence of their countries, in the light of Russian attempts to revise borders and rebuild regional hegemony, to support processes that will contribute to the building of mature democracies, to bring them closer to Euro-Atlantic structures and to deepen their ties with Poland. Dialogue with the Russians remains within the Centre's sphere of interest, but for both political and moral reasons it must be limited to individuals and institutions that have unequivocally condemned Russian aggression and crimes.
The Mieroszewski Centre focuses on history, sociology, international affairs and international legal issues, i.e. on those fields of science in which reliable fact-finding and the provision of balanced interpretations, based on clear axiological criteria, are of great socio-political importance. It contributes to a better mutual understanding between Poles and other nations of Central and Eastern Europe, which is the primary task of the Mieroszewski Centre.
The research conducted at the Centre is directed towards:
- deepening reliable knowledge of the history of the countries and peoples of Central and Eastern Europe and of their current situation,
- combating historiographical manipulations, past and present, with regard to the history of Central and Eastern Europe,
- promoting interpretations based on international law and the values underpinning European civilisation.
The publishing house focuses primarily on the publication of scholarly works, especially those in the fields of history and international law, supporting research on key issues concerning Central and Eastern Europe. The publishing house also offers popular science books, which aim to bring complex topics to a wide audience in an accessible way, promoting knowledge of history and culture. In addition, the publishing house publishes fiction, including contemporary prose, which enriches the literature of the region, providing readers with valuable and inspiring literary works.
The Mieroszewski Centre conducts educational and training activities, organising workshops, seminars and specialised programmes to deepen knowledge of Central and Eastern European history, culture and politics. The Centre offers training on combating disinformation, thematic summer schools and translation schools to help participants develop their skills in translating literature.
The Mieroszewski Centre is actively involved in combating stereotypes about the nations of Central and Eastern Europe, aiming to dispel simplistic beliefs about the region. Through the organisation of educational workshops, scientific programmes or public events, the Centre promotes reliable, fact-based knowledge to understand the historical, cultural and political complexity of the nations of this part of Europe.
The Mieroszewski Centre actively fights disinformation by organising specialised training courses that not only promote reliable information, but also equip participants with the tools to effectively identify and counter media manipulation. These workshops focus on analysing disinformation techniques applied to history and current events in Central and Eastern Europe, teaching critical thinking and verification of sources. The centre places particular emphasis on educating teachers to strengthen their resistance to propaganda and to help spread objective knowledge among children and young people.
The Mieroszewski Centre organises conferences, lectures and public debates to promote sound knowledge and create a space for the exchange of views on key topics concerning the history, culture and politics of Central and Eastern Europe. These events bring together both experts and representatives of civil society, creating a forum for open dialogue and discussion on contemporary challenges of the region.
The Mieroszewski Centre organises the Open Call, a grant programme that supports various projects aimed at promoting the history, culture and heritage of the peoples of Central and Eastern Europe. Under this competition, funding can be provided for both local initiatives targeting smaller communities and larger, international projects with a wide reach. Projects can include cultural events, research, publications, conferences, workshops, and study visits, all with the aim of bringing the rich heritage of the nations of the region to a Polish audience.
The Mieroszewski Centre runs a scholarship programme to support researchers by offering them the opportunity to deepen their research into the history, culture and politics of the Central and Eastern European region. The scholarship enables participants not only to conduct research, but also to establish international contacts, exchange experiences and develop cooperation with Polish scientific and cultural institutions.
The Mieroszewski Centre actively builds lasting relationships with academic, expert, scientific, cultural and political centres both in Poland and abroad. This creates a broad network of cooperation that fosters the exchange of knowledge, experience and the creation of joint research, educational and cultural initiatives. These partnerships allow for projects of international scope that contribute to a better understanding of the history, politics and culture of Central and Eastern Europe.
Our patron is Juliusz Mieroszewski (1906-1976) - widely regarded as one of the most outstanding Polish political writers of the 20th century. Mieroszewski, as a convinced rationalist, believed that in the long term it is ideas that shape the world and are the determinant of the development of history, not the material base.
