Polish-Belarusian Translation School

Translation is not only a craft – it is also a cultural mission. The Polish-Belarusian Translation School “Words for Words”, organised by the Mieroszewski Centre, is a programme for translators who wish to develop their skills, work with experts, and bring contemporary Belarusian literature into the Polish literary sphere.

Participants go through all stages of a translator’s work – from the first encounter with a text, through analysis and editing, to learning about the realities of the publishing market, copyright law, and opportunities for funding literary projects.

The programme is based on monthly weekend sessions, each combining lectures by experts with intensive workshops on translated texts.

Most importantly, the participants’ work will not remain in a drawer – the final outcome will be an anthology of contemporary Belarusian short stories in their Polish translations.

The Centre provides full organisational support – materials, accommodation, and meals – so that participants can fully focus on their creative work.

Why this school?

In Poland, Belarusian literature appears only sporadically, most often framed in a political context. Yet contemporary Belarusian prose is diverse and modern – ranging from experimental writing to social and realist fiction – and deserves to reach Polish readers.

The school was created in order to:

  • develop the translation skills of participants under the guidance of recognized specialists,
  • create a dedicated space for young translators of Belarusian literature,
  • deliver a tangible result: the publication of an anthology of short stories translated by participants,
  • build a bridge between Polish and Belarusian culture, including within the Belarusian diaspora in Poland.

The Polish-Belarusian Translation School “Words to Words” is not just a training programme – it is a cultural mission. Thanks to your work, contemporary Belarusian literature can enter the Polish literary debate as a diverse, vibrant, and modern voice. Become a translator who opens the door for Polish readers to this world – and see your translations published in our anthology.
