Why the myth of Russia's alleged promise not to expand NATO?
Russian politicians regularly repeat the narrative that in 1990 the US promised not to expand NATO eastwards.
In fact, there is no evidence of such a commitment. In analysing this history, it is worth considering why Russia is not in NATO and how Kremlin propaganda uses this claim to justify opposition to NATO enlargement. The admission of new countries, such as Finland, has further exacerbated tensions. Could the NATO-Russia conflict escalate into a direct confrontation?
