Against royal alliances. Russia, Europe and the Polish struggle for independence in the 19th century
The articles, written by a group of select historians from Poland and neighbouring countries, address the international aspects of the Polish insurrections and analyse their long-term impact on the fate of the Poles and the history of Europe.
‘In the Polish-Russian dialogue, the issue of Polish liberation uprisings in the 19th century is one of the classic topics. The Polish dispute over the insurrectionary tradition has always had its mirror image on the Russian side. It manifested itself in the dispute over the empire's policy towards the Polish cause and the Poles, the attitude of tsarist absolutism towards republican and liberal ideas. It was an integral part of the Russian debate over the Empire's place in Europe and attempts to modernise it. These issues are still a point of reference for contemporary Polish-Russian debates, intellectual disputes and political problems’ (from the introduction).
