Memory and Law School – History, Identity, Justice

Order based on force versus order based on law. Why should we defend international law? ‘Memory and Law’ is a summer school organised by the Mieroszewski Centre, dedicated to the intersection of history, law and politics.

It is a place for those who want to understand how law shapes narratives about the past and how historical politics becomes a tool in international disputes.

For six days, surrounded by the Masurian lakes, participants - students, PhD students, young researchers, journalists and analysts - meet with experts in law, history and political science. Together, they reflect on the complex relationship between memory and law.

The school will take place on 24-29 August 2025 in the Lake District. Applicants must be fluent in English. For more information, please see the FAQ.

Memory and Law Summer School is a project of the Mieroszewski Centre that, for years, has been bringing together young opinion leaders and researchers from Central and Eastern Europe around topics related to international law, history, memory politics, disinformation, political analysis, and public communication. Each edition provides a unique opportunity to develop critical thinking skills, learn from outstanding lecturers, and work in interdisciplinary teams.

Thanks to its unique combination of theory and practice, the summer school equips participants with the tools necessary to understand the complex relations between past and present, between law and politics, and between scholarly research and public debate. The program includes sessions on the limits of international law, trials for war crimes, the role of experts in shaping policy, and the impact of the media on collective memory.

The Mieroszewski Centre invites curious, open-minded individuals who are ready for intensive work and eager to engage in meaningful debate.
