‘Świat Sybiru’ portal nominated for Historical Event of the Year 2024

Can history educate, move, and connect people? The Świat Sybiru portal proves that it can – which is why it has been selected as a finalist in the Historical Event of the Year 2024 competition in the Education category.

The winners will be chosen by public vote. Voting is open from June 18 to August 25, 2025, and everyone can cast one vote per day at: whr.muzhp.pl

Modern memory education – for all generations

Świat Sybiru is a popular science portal dedicated to the history of deportations and forced resettlements of Poles deep into the Russian and Soviet empires. Its strength lies in combining reliable historical knowledge with modern formats – including articles, podcasts, documentaries, photography, the interactive ‘Photo Mysteries’ section, and archival materials. The platform is available in Polish and English, is free of charge, and open to everyone.

The portal is used by teachers and students, researchers and journalists, families of Sybiraks, and individuals seeking to reconstruct the fates of their relatives. Users come from over 100 countries, with more than 30% from outside Poland. It is a project that not only educates, but also moves, connects, and builds bridges between past and present.

The Mieroszewski Centre – a proud partner of the project

From the beginning, the Mieroszewski Centre has co-created the Świat Sybiru portal in partnership with the Sybir Memorial Museum. We believe that modern historical education should be accessible, engaging, and support collective memory.

As an institution dedicated to dialogue and cooperation in Central and Eastern Europe, we understand how important it is to tell the stories of people whose voices were silenced or forgotten. This portal represents a shared responsibility for memory – and a tool to pass that memory on to future generations.

Vote – the memory of Sybir depends on you too

Anyone can take part in the public voting. Simply go to whr.muzhp.pl, explore the finalist projects, and cast your vote once per day, choosing one project in each of the three categories: Event, Exhibition, and Education.

The memory of Sybir depends on you. Vote for an educational initiative that remembers the deportees.
