What is the future of Ukrainian art? A debate with Ukrainian artists at SDK Słonecznik.

The time of war is, as it might seem, a dead period for art. Some galleries, institutions and museums in Ukraine have closed down, many artists have left or become involved in the defence of the country. The most valuable works of art are being secured or exported. Cities are plunged into darkness and anticipation. Ukrainian culture is deliberately destroyed by Russian forces. Paradoxically, this makes it stronger and its voice more audible in the world. Creators and artists uncertain of the coming future have not stopped creating, and exhibitions of Ukrainian art continue to open at home and abroad. Many have shifted their activities from the field of art towards activism, volunteering and post-art activities.

In a discussion led by journalist and critic Alek Hudzik with Ukrainian artists, we will talk about the change that has taken place in Ukrainian art. We will consider what its condition is during the war. Can art exist in the darkest of times? Do artists only speak of grief and rage in their works? Or are they also about faith and hope?
