Summary of activities in 2023

It has been an intensive year at the Mieroszewski Centre. The experience of 2023 builds up the conviction that projects undertaken for the benefit of Poland's dialogue with Central and Eastern European countries are certainly needed on an international as well as local level. Over the past twelve months, the Mieroszewski Centre continued projects which are already well known, while the majority of them were premiere events.

At this year's REPOWER workshop aimed at Ukrainian women, 15 strong and gorgeous girls took part in classes on practical techniques related to job applications. The participants also tackled tasks that were much more difficult and required them to step out of their comfort zone.

The Centre also organised entirely new workshop series, such as Humbug, created in collaboration with the Demagog Association. During the event, a trainer showed primary and secondary school teachers how to verify the credibility of sources and how to use fact-checking tools. Thanks to the Humbug workshop, almost 30 male and female teachers from all over Poland were qualified and equipped with practical tools to enable them to effectively identify disinformation in social media.

The Mieroszewski Centre has also maintained a continuity of summer schools, hosting participants from Poland, Ukraine, Belarus, Latvia and Georgia. During the Summer School in Łękuk and BridgeAnalytica, knowledge was taught on:

  • logico-linguistic errors,
  • disinformation methods,
  • international law,
  • and the development of analysis writing.

The Centre also prepared the first autumn school, which took place in Komierowo and was conducted in the three native languages of the participants in Polish, Ukrainian and Belarusian.

During the three schools, the best male and female researchers from academia and think tanks were brought together and, above all, dozens of male and female participants met, educated and exchanged experiences.

The Centre has also fundamentally developed translation projects, with four series of workshops and translation schools in 2023. The lecturers and tutors of our meetings imparted knowledge on the art of translation to 25 participants of the Words on Words programme, while creating new generations of translators and translators of Ukrainian, Georgian and Russian literature. A new event was the first edition of the Power of Expression workshop, in which, during 3 days of classes, beginners in the art of translation learned the principles of cooperation with a publisher, author, editor.

Speaking of books, we cannot forget about the publishing house, which this year published or co-published as many as 6 publications. Their premieres and presentations took place in Warsaw, Lublin, Wrocław, Kiev and St. Petersburg. Another 3 books are in composition or printing and their premieres can be expected in the coming months. The Mieroszewski Centre also participated in the Book Fair in Warsaw and Tbilisi.

The Centre, fighting stereotypes, also published a series of documentaries 'Moldova. Renewal', which aimed to increase knowledge about Moldova among Poles. Thus, 5 short documentaries can be viewed on the Centre's social media channels.

Over the past 12 months, the Mieroszewski Centre has also presented 3 opinion poll reports:

  • Belarusian emigration in Poland - opinions, attitudes, dilemmas,
  • Poles about Belarus and Belarusians,
  • Poland and Poles through the eyes of Ukrainians 2023.

The Centre also co-organised two editions of the 'Dear Future' exhibition created by Polish and Ukrainian male and female artists considering what kind of art to create during wartime and whether it is possible to create art at all. The second edition is still on - we invite you to the BWA Gallery in Bielsko-Biała.

In addition, the Centre has organised nearly 40 events of various kinds: debates, expert discussions, study visits, which took place in Warsaw, Lviv, Kiev, Brussels, Yerevan, Batumi and many other cities.

In 2023, 44 projects for a total of PLN 1,197,288 were co-financed in the Open Competition, and 3 scholarship programmes were carried out: Badaj w Polsce, Badaj na Ukrainie and Miesię miesiąc w Polsce, in which 46 researchers were awarded.

The Centre's male and female employees in 2023 gave more than 200 interviews in the print media, as well as on television, radio and the internet. In turn, the online reach of the Mieroszewski Centre reached 4 million viewers and recipients!

Thank you for being and staying with us throughout 2023 and see you in 2024.
