This volume offers an extensive selection of Soviet documentation concerning Poles and the Polish underground in the south-eastern provinces of the so-called Second Polish Republic.

These materials have not been edited in Polish and researchers were not aware of their sources, originating from the archives of the Ukrainian Security Service, which were hard to access until recently. This volume and its continuation entitled “Volhynia and Galicia under the Reinstated Soviet Power” reveal many aspects of the Soviet policy towards the Poles that have not been previously known to researchers.

The publication contains documents revealing the attitudes of the authorities of Soviet Ukraine, including Nikita Khrushchev, towards Poles, information about the Polish-speaking Soviet partisan units, reports on sentiments among the Polish population living in Volhynia and Eastern Galicia, as well as materials illustrating the Soviets’ attitude towards the Volhynia Massacre and the early steps adopted by the NKVD and NKGB in the fight against the Polish independence-oriented underground movement.

The publication is the outcome of the research project entitled “Relations between the Soviet Authorities and the Polish Underground State: 1943–1946.”
