Volhynia and Eastern Galicia under German Occupation 1943–1944
This volume offers an extensive selection of Soviet documentation concerning Poles and the Polish underground in the south-eastern provinces of the so-called Second Polish Republic.
The materials contained in the publication have not previously been edited in Polish, and the sources presented - hitherto unknown to researchers - come from the archives of the Security Service of Ukraine. This volume and its continuation, Volhynia and Eastern Galicia under the Second Soviet, reveal many new, hitherto unknown aspects of the USSR's policy towards Poles.
The publication contains documents depicting the attitude of the Soviet Ukrainian authorities, including Nikita Khrushchev, towards the Poles. It reveals information about the Polish-speaking branches of the Soviet partisans, reports on the mood of the Polish population living in Volhynia and Eastern Galicia, as well as materials illustrating the attitude of the USSR authorities towards the Volhynian Massacre. It also describes the beginnings of the fight against the Polish independence underground by the NKVD and NKGB.
The publication is the outcome of the research project entitled “Relations between the Soviet Authorities and the Polish Underground State: 1943–1946.”
