This publication offers an extensive selection of Soviet source materials on Poles and the Polish underground in Volhynia and Eastern Galicia.

The documents, originating mostly from the archives of the Ukrainian Security Service, which were hard to access until recently, cover the final period of World War II, when the Soviet Union reinstated its power over the provinces of Volhynia, Lviv, Ternopil and Stanyslaviv, as well as the first post-war years, after Poland transferred Volhynia and Eastern Galicia to the USSR.

The volume is a follow-up to “Volhynia and Eastern Galicia under German Occupation 1943–1944.” Readers will find reports that describe and analyse the sentiment among the local Polish population, proposals of actions against Poles put forward by Nikita Khrushchev, details of the operational work carried out by NKGB and NKVD officers, information about solicited agents, sources illustrating Poles’ participation in the so-called “mopping-up detachments” and materials illustrating the atrocities of Soviet totalitarianism through the fate of individuals.

The publication is the outcome of the research project entitled “Relations between the Soviet Authorities and the Polish Underground State: 1943–1946.”
